That will definitively be great to wake-up the 24th July and walk to the finish arena of O-Ringen, on probably a beautiful sunny day and with the noise of the waves in the background - a real holyday feeling! But don’t get me wrong, when you will be standing at the start, you’ll have to turn on the orienteering mode, because this stage is going to be a very special one.
There is a lot to say about the third stage in a five-day event. It is usually there that your legs start to be a little bit less reactive and you need some positive attitudes and inner talks during the warm-up to tune-up the right mood. This is also there that the differences between runners stretch out and you can see more clearly where you stand in the result board.
“Half-time”, this is how they call it in team sport. A good coach can change the spirit of a losing team during the half-time to get back to the field with the right attitude and win the game. So, the 24th July, it is just the perfect day to become your own coach and turn out a bad start on the two first stages, or just keeping up the good mood before going back to inland.
The terrain in Ringenäs is in typical Halland sandy forest and will also offer a very different challenge during this O-Ringen as we will move next to the beach where the orienteering technique and rhythm have to be adapted. This is the type of terrain where there are usually not so much route-choices, or at least all the best routes stay very close of the red line, as the terrain is fairly flat (2,5 meters contour interval). Therefore, it is important to stay as sharp as possible when we talk about the route selection. This is what I am use to call “formula1-orienteering” – each extra meter ran away from the red line will have a cost in term of final time. Thus, the compass will easily become your best friend that day.
But even if on this time of terrain I will always consider as the first option to run under the red line, I will also pay attention if there is no better alternative as you will see with the following examples.
