On Tuesday afternoon, the Junior Elite sprint race filled the parks and the square in the centre of Örnsköldsvik with people. Between controls crossed some of the world’s best juniors.
Isac von Krusenstierna had a tough start to the race and looked like he may get beaten at the time check, but after an extremely strong finish he was again able to climb to the top of the podium, seven seconds ahead of Jesper Svensk.
“I was a bit surprised, it shouldn't be possible. But I had energy in my legs all the way, and many runners looked tired when they passed the arena”, he said.
Katja Brütsch from OL NWK ZH / SH won the W18 Elite.
“I made no mistakes. But it was very tough and some artificial fences made it difficult”, she said.
It was a nervous wait for Katja Brütsch on the leader’s couch. Because she does not understand Swedish, she had no idea how the race was going. But there was no reason to worry – her final winning margin was 14 seconds.
In the W20 Elite, Ida Øbro from OK Orion won by 29 seconds – an eternity in sprint orienteering, and today’s biggest winning margin.
“I was not tired at all today. My head was in the right place, I made good decisions and ran as fast as possible”, she said.
Elias Tidevall from Skogsluffarnas OK discovered after the race that he missed some clever passages where he could have made up time. But despite that, he won by six seconds in the M18 elite class.
The Stockholm resident, who lives in Sandviken and studies at the orienteering school, took his own routes through one of the parks.
“There were a lot of people. Some had picnics and I had to jump over them. They were terrified”, he said.
